Judith Grodowitz is an internationally recognized teacher of the Alexander Technique with 36 years of experience working with individuals and groups in New York City and around the world. She is inspired by working with people of all ages and walks of life, with a range of motivations for study. Ms. Grodowitz specializes in working with performance artists. 

Trained in technical and improvisational dance forms and somatic practices, Ms. Grodowitz originated leading roles for the Obie-Award winning company Skyfish Ensemble (best new American play), directed by the late Lee Nagrin.

As a teacher, Ms. Grodowitz has worked with a remarkable variety of students – from conservatory musicians to people living with cancer to Broadway actors – and in an extraordinary range of locales, from Vienna to Estonia to New Delhi. Ms. Grodowitz, who derives particular inspiration from storied landscapes, has drawn students from Europe, Africa, Brazil, Australia, the Caribbean, China and the United States to her movement and mythology workshops on Folegandros Island, Greece. The interior spaces of Vienna's revered Leopold Museum moved her to direct students from the ImPulsTanz International Dance Festival in an on-site performance that explored the relation between performance and visual arts. 

Ms. Grodowitz's teaching, carefully designed for the goals of each student or group, is grounded in F. M. Alexander’s fundamental insights into how awareness of human design and function can facilitate ease of movement and presence. Ms. Grodowitz’s work is furthered by her conviction that embodied attention to the links among story, image, sound, and gesture is a vital means by which we may bring greater imagination to the performance of any task – whether on stage, in a conference room, a museum, or in a garden – and by which we may enjoy more expansive and healthful lives.

Ms. Grodowitz’s private practice is located in Manhattan and Shelter Island, New York. She is currently a member of the faculty of  the esteemed William Esper Acting Studio, NYC. Judith taught annually at the ImPulsTanz International Dance Festival (Vienna) for fifteen years. Other past positions include: the Mannes College of Music and the Actors Studio Drama School, New School University; Vocal Arts Graduate Program, Bard College; consultant to the Vassar College Drama Department; New Delhi Gati Dance Forum; Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker’s P.A.R.T.S. Dance Conservatory (Brussels); New York Theater Workshop (workshops and performance coaching); Sloan Kettering Memorial Cancer Center Alternative Medicine Center; and the Penland School of Craft, North Carolina.

Judith’s education includes studies in Alexander Technique (ACAT certified 1987), Art of Breathing (AmSat certified 2003), Bartenieff Fundamentals, and Literature (University of Maryland B.A. 1973), and many dance modalities and somatic studies. She is a member of the American Society for Teachers of the Alexander Technique and the American Center of the Alexander Technique.

Judith is an avid gardener and salt water swimmer.
